Living Dharma
Although I’m not able to accurately assess anyone else’s qualities, in my personal experience, Elizabeth Mattis Namgyel has consistently been one of the most inspiring examples of naturalness and depth. Her rigorous study and passionate exploration of the Middle Way teachings of the Buddha always seem inseparable from a heartfelt urgency to merge these teachings with her lived experience, which very much includes how she uplifts and serves others with bodhichitta. Elizabeth has a burning enthusiasm to see the Dharma in everything she experiences, yet without deluding or distorting the authentic lineage teachings even slightly. Her awe of experience is contagious, and her genuine, unfabricated humility clearly indicates how much she cherishes the inconceivably vast and profound teachings of the Buddha and Guru Rinpoche. Elizabeth never lets herself off the hook, taking the easy way out with rote answers or photocopied approximations, but instead continues to seek the elegant poise of fresh, adventurous inquiry that joyfully leans into the unknown with playful curiosity and razor sharp vision. She seems to thrive on the challenge of being present without any safety net, never allowing mere knowledge of Dharma to be enough—it has to be a fresh, real time engagement with precisely what’s happening right now, which is why I’m very excited to listen to her podcasts in conversation with other deep thinkers and spiritual practitioners of various faiths, traditions, specialties, and backgrounds. Her unwillingness to compromise depth or get stuck in easy answers highlights Elizabeth’s spacious flexibility, her appreciation of vivid openness, and her love for others and the world, allowing everything to be as it is: dynamic, creative, messy, unpredictable, and always teeming with life and new opportunities to embody the vast and profound lineage wisdom of the Buddhadharma here and now.
