“I’ve loosely followed Gavia’s writing for years, so I can’t believe I didn’t listen to her podcast until August 2017. I was fresh off a screening of Dunkirk and was hankering for a really good discussion of points that struck me about the movie, so I pored over countless reviews and other movie podcasts and was amazed that none of the Nolan bros or Serious Male Critics delved deeply into the stuff I wanted to see discussed. Lo and behold, Morgan and Gavia literally hit every sweet spot in their Dunkirk episode for me, i.e. masculinity, sentimentality or lack thereof, the meaning of the strange last shot (which ALMOST NO ONE ELSE IS TALKING ABOUT), everyone’s favorite granddad Mark Rylance, some extremely on-point Kenneth Branagh ribbing. Plus an actual breakdown of 70mm and the implications of Dunkirk being shot and presented in it, and an actual shout-out to the movie’s omission of PoC. Morgan and Gavia combine affectionate, obsessive pop culture and actor knowledge with humor and some pretty trenchant social and critical analysis. I’m looking forward to going through their archive and having this podcast available for the future. 90% of the pop culture podcasts I follow are mostly by men, so thank god for this.
Only caveat is that I’m pretty sure Fionn is an Irish name and pronounced “Finn,” not Fee-On.”
