“Most layman podcasts reviewers will go straight toward likes/dislikes and nothing else. This isn’t one of them.
Morgan and Gavia have an interesting dynamic. In general Gavia is more into pop culture favorites like the Marvel films and Morgan preferred the more independent/art house films. But their reviews are not that cut and dry. True to form, they showed themselves to do the research on the films they reviewed and depending on the film, talk about it’s fandom history of the film as well. (The review of Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the best example of fandom exploration.)
The podcast subtitle is “A podcast about pop culture obsessions”, but in reality they review films in the context of today’s world and in the past. Pop culture doesn’t mean what is most popular now, but rather what is happening whether it is culturally and politically at the exact moment, and that’s the kind of nuance film review podcasts are in desperate need of. If you want a movie podcast that go deep in the culture issues, Overinvested is one that cannot be turned down.”
