Regarding "Economic Reality"
In the episode "Economic Reality Comes Before Social Justice," Patterson begins by saying something along the lines of "If you you don't understand economics, then don't talk about it - or, at least, anything you say will be non sequitur." He then goes on to violate his own rule for about eight minutes. Equating "economic reality" to the ultimate free market economy, Patterson fails to address coordination failure, externalities, and monopoly power - which constitute situations when markets fail. Consider education, which generates large positive externalities and is therefore underproduced - enter public education. Or pollution, which generates large negative externalities and is therefore overproduced - enter taxes on pollution. If Patterson is truly what he claims to be, he would do well to rethink, and repost, his understanding of the free market economy and the role of government. The question is no longer "Are markets good or bad?" but instead, "When are markets the best solution?" Or, Patterson could just adhere to his rule, "Don't talk about economics unless you understand economics." And just because you've watched the PBS ten-part television series "Free to Choose," doesn't mean you understand economics.Read full review »

The interviews are tremendously interesting. Even more important, Patterson is an important model for the academic entrepreneur, taking his platform out there in the free market. Who says the State is the only owner of the Academy?
