Jing “Black Myth: Wukong” is China's first so-called "AAA" blockbuster video game, and CyberPink gals are here to talk about it. We haven't discussed gaming before, as none of our hosts (other than Yifang) are avid gamers, but we couldn't pass up the opportunity to join the discourse around this cross-cultural phenomenon that's the game of the summer (or dare we say, year). To fully understand the hype around "Black Myth: Wukong," all participants in this episode played the game. Especially Xiaolan who decided to jump right into the Wukong universe, as a new gamer. Along with our two guests who are both gaming industry professionals and passionate gamers, we discuss the psychological journey of female gamers as they engage with the game. Is "Black Myth: Wukong" considered a Soulslike game, and if so, how do Soulslike games allow us to perceive our agency while we're engrossed in the game's narrative? While many view the commercially successful "Black Myth: Wukong" as a pinnacle of Chinese cultural export in recent years, news about misogynistic comments from the development team surfaced. What does this mean for the persistent misogyny in the gaming industry as a whole? We talk about Gamergate 1.0 and 2.0, what it means to be a woman and a gamer, and the gaming community at large. Tune in for a riveting discussion on "Black Myth: Wukong" and more!
