Yes! Yes! Yes! Battle cry! Ban screen based learning in schools!
Way to go. Thank you! This podcast was invaluable for me - and I can’t help but think it voiced the fears and reservations that many of us have had for a long time about the use of iPads/laptops in classrooms - but I for one had no idea that some countries are waking up to the fact that screen based learning in the classroom is (to put it mildly) regressive. No kidding! I think the term ‘a failed experiment’ better describes what has happened in the classroom these past twenty years. As for the young ones - not to mention the teens- screen time on a smartphone is laden with harm for them - on so many levels. And the babies or toddlers you c with an iPad propped up in front of them?! And social media? Devastating. Tik Tok? Makes me shudder. Instagram? Gives me the creeps. Facebook - so quaint now-almost archaic - but Zuckerberg started it all when he launched it as a virtual meeting place for those at uni way back in the early naughties. I am a mum and am humbly grateful that my children weren’t exposed at a young age-my youngest was just off to uni when Facebook was launched. Now it’s a virtual never-ending tyranny for all the darlings that -as Alison pointed out-spend all day with their peers at school and can’t get away from them ever-nowhere, nohow. Get into bed and turn out the light - they’re all still there- loitering behind the seductive glow on the screen - a few taps and the child is back in the cauldron - no one to help - no one to protect them - just the peer group - and that’s be4 they get to the noxious world of ‘influencers’. No wonder so many young are so anxious, insecure, self-absorbed and STUPID. Just look at the generation that is coming of age in the USA-their ignorance is vast-civic, cultural, historical, geographical-they are a generation of ignorami ( they probably think Palestine is in Arizona and Minneapolis is a city in Europe and as for the River To The Sea - they have no idea which river or sea but they think both might be in Florida) and now Britain is not far behind …. and we have allowed all this to happen. We are a bunch of unwitting conformist criminals for letting them do this to our young-are we bent on their total destruction? Just as we were during Corona with the dastardly lockdowns, masks and vaccines? I despair and wonder if we’re all past saving - then comes your wonderful podcast with lady guest Winkleman. So grateful to know about her-gives me hope that we the mothers/parents/grandparents/ guardians can all get on board and push back and at the very least- make our voices heard. First step is to raise our voices against screen based learning in schools. Thank you Liam - thank you Alison-for articulating this through your guest and through your wonderful podcast. You are one of my podcast besties (I only have two 🤓) I love how combative Alison is! She gets up on her two hind legs and really lets rip! Grateful to have you both out there in the ether 🙏

More reviews of Planet Normal
I enjoyed the first podcast a lot. I am sure it will only improve as Alison and Liam get into their stride. If they can find a similar rapport to Jackie Smith and Ian Dale while hopefully avoiding their sometimes self indulgent and over the top innuendo then they’ll be onto a winner.

You haven’t heard what they have to say yet. You may find yourself agreeing with them.

Not sure that two households with direct experience of Covid-19 is “normal” - up here it isn’t. A very welcome interview with Alan Johnson - as Alison suggested in the wrap up, let’s have some serious politicians back on the front line - on both government and opposition benches!
