Often poor mental game advice
Nominally this podcast is about poker psychology and mental game. In practice, the ostensible coach who leads the discussions is much less curious, insightful, and centered than his student. Some of the advice that she appears to be internalizing is unfortunate and a little bit sad. For example, there is a lengthy discussion about how "booking a win" is negative EV. That's ludicrous. Cutting a session short when you are still feeling good and fresh and up on the day could be a great way of building confidence for a newer player. Or relatedly, despite the advice he dispenses, Pete's own insecurities bubble often to the surface, such as when he discusses feeling hurt and blocking people online who fail to recognize him as a serious coach. Likewise, he finds it necessary to bash and demean without caveat free online poker content available. It's terrible radio, but the purpose is glaring; there's no question does this show is in many respects a thinly veiled advertisement. None of this is to say that Pete isn't and affable and intelligent guy, but I would suggest regrouping and reflection prior to a season two. Of the episodes, I would certainly recommend the "finding your A game" episode, which does have some interesting insights indeed. Ultimately, Melissa is worth the price of admission for many of the episodes and seems like a doggedly and committed learner and player.Read full review »

Looking...Read full review »
