Arceus inspirations
So I think I know why Arceus is described as having 1,000 arms. People keep thinking its the unknown or mega evolution and looking at Arceus and its dex entries alone I get it cause that cosmic llama does not have any arms let alone 1000 of them. But you have to look at it in the context of Japanese religion I was doing my honors project on the Genderfluidity of the Bodhisattvah, Kannon (also known as Kuan Yin as well as many other names). Kannon is said to have 1000 arms to reach all the people of the world but theyre rarely depicted like this save for in Japan in which statues often number 42 in terms of arms. And their the onlyfigure in shinto or buddhism I know of that does this.Their gender fluidity is also the result of them transforming to match the gender, social status, and even species of their adherents much like how Arceus changes its type (you know the giant wooden ststue the first Hokage fights Madara with? Thats kannon) Thing is that they dont completely fit Arceus style as a creator god. Theres one Chinese legend about Kuan Yin helping the first creatures to live in harmony but they're more often seen as a princess who attained enlightenment long as long after things got rolling Theres is an older Chinese myth about a giant called Pangu who hatched from an egg at the dawn of time (much like some pokemon we know) And then died with his body becoming the world, Ymir style Best I can figure out is that Arceus is an amalgamation of Kannon, Pangu, and some christian vibes to create the God of pokemon, but rhyhorn was still the firstRead full review »
