Treasury orthodoxy always wins
Only partly kidding ;) great podcast and looking forward to it taking us through the election. But both are steeped in the Treasury world view. If you want to know what squeezes the life out of regional policy or major infrastructure, it’s the Treasury never wanting to cede power. Rather than block outright, it sets impossible conditions and lies in wait for things to fail, cries crocodile tears and then claws the money and power back. Sticking to short term answers, small patch and mend projects. Genuine innovation is only possible by pulling one over on the Treasury, even if it’s what the Chancellor wants. They play the long game.
