Americanisation of the podcast
It pains me to say it, but this went from an indispensable weekly EU politics podcast to something I genuinely struggle to listen to anymore. Since Andrew Gray was replaced by Sarah Wheaton as editor the podcast has become incredibly Americanised to the point of being nauseatingly cringe and interfering with the otherwise excellent reporting done by reporters who feature on the show. I fully understand Politico is a US outlet, and this isn’t a diatribe against American culture, but it makes no sense to do this for a media outlet that writes about EU politics for a European audience. In general I’ve noticed Politico EU’s written articles moving this way too - like the recent one that said Viktor Orban was “zooming around like a ‘cat on meth”… I’m sorry but who in Europe makes comparisons like this? Europe doesn’t even have a meth epidemic like the US does for this to register as a comparison. I’m convinced that this change has started to happen since Wheaton took over. Please, please stop it, you’re ruining the good work of your reporters.

More reviews of EU Confidential
Shallow analysis and comments, nothing I wouldn’t get from a random newspaper. I expected insightful analysis and comments from the guests, not just an explanation of how there are different kinds of hand sanitisers or that people confused EU ACDC with the band. Please, come on.

I teach European politics and this is my number one resource to stay up-to-date and get expert analysis on political developments in Europe. The dynamic among the participants is great—a positive, entertaining tone.
