When your hatred for a character blunts your basic media literacy...
... it makes all of your conclusions suspect. Just for a recent example; "Spike deciding to become a champion." Spike doesn't decide to become a champion; he expects Buffy to give him the amulet, because he has a soul but he's more than human, and he's one of the only people currently in Sunnydale who's qualified in that respect. When Buffy tells him the amulet needs to be worn by a champion, his face falls, he looks away, and the hand that he had held out to take it falls back down to his side. Buffy then gives him the amulet anyway. That's not interpretation, that's just an account of what happens on screen. He literally rules himself out immediately on hearing the word champion, his expectant look disappearing and no longer reaching for the amulet. A child could understand that body language. If anyone there chooses to make Spike a champion, it's Buffy. Anyone who can watch that and go "Spike chooses to be a champion!" is not just missing subtext, they're missing the basic text of what happens on screen and making themselves look absurd.Read full review »

I am binging this podcast and loving it so much! It’s great to see what was such a formative series for me treated with both respect and judgement, calling out the more problematic areas of the show while also praising what make it so iconic and memorable. Can’t wait to hear more!
