“I’m a Gen Xer and only knew about Joseph McCarthy as the Red Scare man. Good gracious, he’s so much worse than that. The only thing that saved us from McCarthy was his death,
He laid out the path that Trump has followed to the White House and beyond. It was McCarthy and Roy Cohn that set the world up for Trump. There is one degree of freedom between Trump and McCarthy.
The thing about fascists is that they are eternally patient, waiting for an opening to restart their plans to enslave people and enrich themselves. It’s important to remember that Nixon, Regan and GHW Bush’s role was damage the Republican Party, to make it so broken that a fascist demagogue like Trump could take over the party.
The people that lead these movements need to be punished - within the limits of the law - to help prevent their re-emergence in the future.
Thank you to NBC, Rachel Maddow and her team for educating us about McCarthy and his seditious actions. It brings me further comfort that the world has overcome this before.”
