Good ideas in annoying diction
The panel on religion spoke intelligently about the subject, but used the throat-clearing "so" much too often. The pointless "so" has become endemic among our chattering class in the past 20 years. Put a mic in front of someone, and he can hardly help beginning a sentence, "So, . . .", even if what follows is simply the answer to a question like "What did you have for breakfast?" Atlantic's panel was not so so-full as the chatterers of NPR, but this comment may be damning with faint praise. If only they could forget that they are speaking to a large public, we would not suffer from the pointless "so". I am sure of it. None of my acquaintances uses the pointless "so" in private conversation.Read full review »
