“I know this was addressed briefly, but it doesn’t change it: When speaking about the rulers and land and people of the Iberian Peninsula in the time frames discussed in this series, especially in the early half of the episodes so far, the host often says “Spain or Spanish”. Of course she knows there was no Spain back then, and I understand why she may choose to say this to save time or “simplify”. But, firstly, it is very inaccurate to say that, giving listeners, especially those less knowledgeable on the subject, a completely false understanding of how the peoples of the time would have conceptualizer their lands and governments. I think it’s simply an untrue thing to say that misguides listeners. Secondly, and more importantly in my opinion, is it essentially diminishes and dismisses the history of other, quite historically distinct and regions of the Iberian predominantly Peninsula. Catalonia, Basques country, Galicia. And! Especially a completely different country, Portugal! I personally think, every time the host mentions something that at the time was happening in what is now both countries, involving both groups of people and thus their history, such as a war, and then says “the Spanish war”, it is very dismissive and diminutive to the other group. Almost as if they’re part in the war or what else is irrelevant. I don’t think this is the intent, but to me, it comes off very ignorant and arrogant. And for that reason, I very much don’t enjoy listening to an otherwise wonderful podcast. And, I think it strongly diminishes the quality of the podcast. I hope this didn’t come off to harsh.”
