Consistently Smart and Funny
Austin Tichenor and Reed Martin (and the other past and present members and crew of The Reduced Shakespeare Company) are funnier (and probably smarter) than most of the people I get to interact with on a regular basis. They also get to go more interesting places and meet more interesting people. Fortunately, Austin has an iPhone and a really good microphone that he brings with him when he goes to many of these interesting places and speaks with these interesting people. Then he cleverly edits the audio files with another couple of Apple products and distributes the resulting podcast through iTunes. The practical result of this is that we can live vicariously through him, going to interesting places and speaking with interesting people and learning really cool stuff (and since we're living vicariously, we, too get to listen in on the cleverness of Austin, himself). So, yeah, we've been backstage at any number of cool theatres (and even the inner sanctum of the Folger Shakespeare Library), met brilliant people (recently, Michael Whitmore and Howard Sherman come to mind). Thanks, guys. We've also been in cars and dressing rooms ("thank you, five minutes") on tour with a group of working performers. In the last couple of years, the RSC have developed and debuted a couple of new shows, and candidly discussed the process on the podcast. (Full disclosure: this is being written after we saw the opening night performance of the most recent, The Complete Christmas Show Abridged.) It's been a tremendously interesting series of insights, on many levels. For consistency and professionalism, they don't come any better than the Reduced Shakespeare Company podcast. They find their light and hit their mark every time. The fact that they inadvertently teach us so much and make us laugh so often is just a bonus.
