Apparently irony is Actually Bad (again),
so here is a sincere review This is a review of the second episode, which I listened to in its entirety. I won't listen to more episodes because they're long and I disliked it. As a disclaimer, I was turned onto this podcast by someone who dislikes Joy Reid. In fact, I'm giving this a star less than I would otherwise because I dislike her too. But I will try and write a serious review of it regardless. To be honest, the part of the show where they talked about Jacque's childhood (at least I think it was hers—their voices are easily distinguishable but I've never watched Joy's show so I don't know which voice belongs to which host) was kind of interesting, even though they didn't go into anything in any depth. There are basically two large problems with this podcast though: 1. The hosts aren't funny. This one's tough to get past in a format where people talk at you for an hour. That said, not all podcasts are comedy podcasts, even though (a) all the podcasts I listen to are comedy podcasts, and (b) this is supposed to be a crossover between comedy and its declared subject matter of news & politics, kind of in the vein of Chapo Trap House or whatever. You know it's supposed to be comedic because they laugh a bunch, even though if you have my sense of humor you won't be laughing along. 2. They don't seem very self-aware politically. This one is hard to put in a sentence but the big example from this episode is that they talk about gender issues in the most liberal entryist kind of way. It's not necessarily offensive—it's hard for me to judge as a cis listener not to mention one with low expectations—because they seem genuine in their befuddlement, but they also seem to have no idea how befuddled they are. Like they seem to think it's good to judge being cis and binary as natural and the norm, and any deviation from that point as not only discomforting but irreversible, none of which even as a cis and binary person I think I could justify if someone asked me to. But the bigger point is they don't have someone queer on the show (or more broadly someone who's familiar with this section of politics) to help feel it out. Maybe there's a third point, which is a lack of a convincing message behind a "News & Politics" podcast which seems to consist more of Kardashian gossip, anecdotes and "games" than what you would conventionally call news or politics. Like I didn't feel like I was learning facts of particular interest, which is fine, but the perspective on everything was bland and unmotivated imo I wrote this with the aim of providing constructive criticism, and all I really have to offer on that subject is a couple of questions they could ask themselves, though knowing what I do about one of the hosts I have my doubt that they will read this, respect an opinion dissenting from their own and follow through on such lines of inquiry as these: * What kind of show is this? You know, like what would a listener want and expect to hear? As non–major celebrities who aren't funny, podcasters should offer something more than just hanging out if they're looking for listeners. (I admit this is a significant assumption on my part, but I don't buy this podcast as an illuminating cultural artifact either because the hosts have clearly failed to capture the zeitgeist. So if they aren't trying to get more listeners then what is the point of recording this?) * Where is there room for more analysis? I think this is what got CTH big; even if the hosts of that show and the hosts of this show have some different political views, it's a good approach. Seems almost like a prerequisite for doing a politics show (and again, this is not a newscast in the "here are the facts" sense). tl;dr I was bored through like 90% of this; the 'cast isn't good. Sorry if it was just a bad episode but I don't want to subject myself to another hour.Read full review »
