2: Your Mind Can Change Your Biology - Dr. Hemal Patel & Dr. Toby Bertram-Moeller
Listen now
Description
Do we all have more power than we realize to dramatically shift our states of health and vitality?  Are there certain experiences that can materially change our biology and even the expression of our genes?  In this episode, we look at Dr. Patel and Dr. Moeller-Bertram’s unprecedented research at UCSD on the mind-body connection and how it’s possible for us to change our biology through the power of our mind using meditation.  Hemal H. Patel, PhD, is a Professor and Vice-Chair for Research in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Patel’s career has focused on developing an integrated understanding of the organism by studying whole animal and cell physiology techniques with a particular focus on bio-membranes and cellular energetics. He has published over 170 original manuscripts, reviews, and book chapters featured in prominent journals such as Science, Nature Communications, and Circulation. Dr. Patel was initially skeptical about the ability of the mind to impact health, but after reviewing early evidence, he was convinced more research needed to be done to discover the power and impact of meditation on biological markers that would define the mind-body connection. Today, he is actively involved in using an unbiased, discovery-based approach to reveal basic insights into how the meditating mind creates physical changes to alter the biology of living systems. Dr. Patel’s laboratory is poised to link physics, biophysics, and biology to potentially transform our understanding of the mind’s power to change human health. Tobias Moeller-Bertram, MD, is the Chief Medical Officer of Desert Clinic Pain Institute and Summit Institute, focusing on whole-patient care through a multidisciplinary approach. Dr. Moeller-Bertram’s postgraduate training included anesthesia residency at the University of California, San Diego, followed by fellowship training in pain management from the University of California, San Francisco. He joined the Veterans Administration (VA) San Diego Healthcare System and established its pain clinic, serving the veteran population. During his years at UCSD and the VA, he served as the Director for Clinical Pain Research. He currently runs a vibrant private clinical pain service that also incorporates significant research activities in Southern California. Born in Germany, Dr. Moeller-Bertram is currently also an Associate Clinical Professor with the University of California, Riverside, School of Medicine.
