Peter Allen occupies a curious place in Australian lore. At least, in my Australian world, there is no debate as to whether you love, or hate, Peter Allen. He has, over time, transcended the judgements we usually ascribe to celebrities.
Peter Allen is a national deity and his song, I Still Call Australia Home, our unofficial national anthem. As an expat, I can tell you that – play that song amongst a group of Australians who are far from home – and the tears that accompany its playing, they will be real.
