“These are great to listen to when I'm driving home from university, although my sister does tend to groan when I call her up after finishing the episode to tell her what lovely new things I've learned. Would recommend to anyone who could use a laugh and a bit of hope when our politics seem bleak--if Rome could survive their maniacs, we can at least take comfort from the fact that their maniacs were probably crazier/more pathetic than ours.
I especially love the emperors who were so useless that Rob and Jamie spend most of the episode talking about something else entirely, such as Grotesque Bubble Wrap Disease, or when utterly bizarre bits of history get...creatively filled in. (Vespacian's Vespas and eventual fate as a hat stand? Claudius's pet rock? The Plotting Room with the big white board filled with diagrams of a self destructing boat, collapsible room, and the words "STABBY STABBY" written over and over? Yeaaah.)”Read full review »
