This is surprisingly bad
I had pretty decent expectations for this one. I love Gimlet and I thought Homecoming had some pretty strong moments, but Sandra is unfortunately much less interesting than Homecoming. The voice acting and dialogue is extremely stale. Helen sounds emotionless most of the time and completely disinterested. It’s sad because I love Alia Shawkat, but voice acting is not her forte. All the other side characters are very strange as well, and none of them sound invested. It sounds like a few actors might have done this for the paycheck. Content wise- it’s pretty dull. This really isn’t a very original concept. They also don’t explain how the technology behind Sandra works and after several episodes I failed to see any benefit to someone owning a Sandra. At times I felt like they were trying to tap into Black Mirror a bit, but it just doesn’t work for me. Also, echoing the frustration with episode time. Besides the ads, and several minutes of just hearing pointless conversations with Sandra, the story behind Helen is like 7 minutes per episode. It moves very slowly and it’s hard to feel any sense of interest in the main character. Someone said there were crazy cliffhangers but I never felt strongly compelled to click the next episode. Overall, very vanilla. It’s easy enough to listen to if you’re on a long trip or doing something monotonous, but there’s not much to it. I couldn’t get passed episode three. I think Gimlet needs to stay away from audio dramas. Very excited for Habitat though!

More reviews of Sandra
The Ads feel longer and more pominent than the show. The show is interesting but I feel like the story line of the Casper and Firefox Ads are the stars.. which is kind of a bummer.

I don't listen to many fiction podcasts but the premise of this one intrigued me so I checked it out. So glad I did as it is one of the most entertaining podcasts I've heard in quite a while. Well worth the listen.Read full review »

Of Gimlet’s previous fiction podcast, Homecoming, which I somewhat liked. Or more accurately, the GE Podcast Theater productions The Message and LifeAfter, which I liked more. Because there is no other way to explain the premise that a handful of rural Oklahomans could somehow outperform...Read full review »
