My daughter shared this podcast with me and I have listened to almost every episode. Aaron is a terrific interviewer and each episode tells a story of history or current events that is integral to understanding events both past and present. I really enjoy listening to this program. I have to...Read full review »

Love the show. It’s very easy to listen to and interesting. I love the variety of experts that you bring on. Everything is a great listen, zero skips. The draft and crusades episodes are my two favorite so far. Love hearing about war in the Middle Ages. Look forward to your future episodes.

Historical episodes can be informative but the analysis of current events is pitiful and kind of makes you fear for America’s future.

I really enjoy listening to the varied topics covered concerning military affairs.

Frankly I think having my iPhone read me Wikipedia articles would be both more interesting and more accurate. Skip it- others doing this much better.

The guest knew very little about Hezbollah and its dynamics. Read about Lebanon’s history especially since 1975. Btw the soccer field killings were likely the result of an Iron Dome interception or misfired interceptor. Get better educated guests. Goldberg is spouting AIPAC talking points not...Read full review »

Wonderfully well done and insightful. The production values are excellent.

Generally great guests, great questions and conversations. My only quibble would be that the intro could/should be much shorter.

Fantastic info. Terrible delivery. Almost impossible to follow. Needs public speaker training. Talks way too fast. Jumps around way to much. Figure out key points. Slowly, clearly, lay out key points. Stop with fast forward stream of consciousness.

At its best, this podcast offers a platform for some serious strategic thinkers to outline how they assess the various actors in a given strategic context. At its worst, whole episodes are given over the partisan shills scoring points on current domestic US politics. Maddeningly, host can go...Read full review »

Smart guests and knowledgeable interviewer. Never disappointing. Aaron MacLean has really come into his own with choice of topics and guests.

Excellent and informative just listen to Paul fever on wokeness in the military. I’m a conservative, but I don’t care if you are transgender or not. However, selective surgery degrades your readiness and should not be performed in the military.
Prtr8r via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 01/02/24
That Paul Edgar repeated himself at least twice per most sentences. Probably had 4 minutes of actual content. Someone should edit and be the quality control person. This basic problem appears in some other episodes too with different speakers using that same style which doesn’t work well for me.

Great show with a great premise; need to re-invigorate and popularize the value of military history. Absolutely fantastic guests - please include more ONA alums. Dr. Jerry Hendrix would be a great guest

The interviews are well recorded, great questions, and otherwise well produced. As a Naval War College student, and USMC infantry officer, this is the podcast for me. Thanks Aaron and team.

All the people in the reviews who leave one star and say this is a waste of time are completely wrong. There are some episodes which are a bit much especially the one on Sparta, but in general this is a great podcast. It is very insightful and ties historical events to current issues. Incredible show. I have really appreciated this show striving to be neutral in the political divide that exists today despite the political nature of war and foreign policy. That’s why I was disappointed by episode 47 because of the Republican senator’s politically charged and blatantly one-sided...Read full review »

I used to love this podcast. Great topics and guests. Recently the host has been giving more airtime to radical right-wing crazies (Will Scharf?!? Who’s next, Richard Spencer?) and straying from his core expertise on military history and warfighting.

Aaron is a fantastically well informed and learned host who always seems to ask his guests the right questions…just the best military history and strategy pod out there

You guys missed a bunch of important films. Apparently you both need to watch more TCM. The fact that neither of you have seen The Buccaneer with Charlton Heston as Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans, made me stop listening. You both sound like you seen nothing.

Myke cole historian no ,political hack yes … let’s take the Spartans and judge them by 2023 woke standards .., BYW foul mouth for effect, sad to waste ink on his books
qwqqqqqwwww via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 01/20/23
I enjoy the podcast. But, the last one about Sparta had too much cursing. The author did not help his case with all the foul language. Sounds like a smart guy with interesting points, but I can’t listen with my kids if he talks like that.

Would you please publish a reading list based on all the authors you’ve interviewed. Would love to have one place to reference all the topical books as well as others mentioned as great or must reads mentioned during interviews Thank you

I was really enjoying this show until the ridiculous episode with Tom Cotton. Turned it off with five minutes to go b/c I couldn’t take the vitriol that man was spewing. Sorry, won’t be back.

I’ve been listening for a while, but the recent episode with Andrew Lambert discussing the Crimean War, the the echoes of history to the current war in Ukraine was absolutely top notch. Couldn’t recommend it any more.

The interview with Andrew Lambert on the Crimean war is one of the most insightful podcasts I have ever heard. The historical ties between them and today’s war incredibly useful.
