Not worth the wait
The first season of Science Vs had a fair number of problems. The premise of the show pushes the host to be unnecessarily antagonistic (going so far as to scorn people just for being confused) and to treat science as some sort of infallible Magic 8-Ball (which is particularly odd given how many episodes ended with "results uncertain"). The new season retains these problems, with even more snark and less substance than the previous one. I get it: people often form beliefs without doing adequate research. But do we really have to mock someone for suspecting that brown and/or flammable water might not be safe to drink because he didn't get his PhD in hydrology first? Is there a reason that science shows think their main task is to laugh at people (with education treated as almost an afterthought)? This is why people think intellectuals are snobs, and it doesn't convince them to do anything but get their information elsewhere (often from the worst places). And if the show is just for those who are already in the know, exactly what legitimate purpose does it serve? UPDATE: I have just listened to the attachment parenting episode, and it seems like there was a giant missed opportunity at the end. After explaining why attachment parenting methods do nothing for children, there is a brief glimmer where the topic of what it does for the parents is broached. But sadly, the thread is left a loose end. This could have been the most fascinating part of the show. I guess it just didn't provide a good enough opportunity to insult young mothers.Read full review »
