Weirdly Close-Minded
I get it. This isn't a "film reviewer" podcast or even a "writer" podcast. It's about screenwriting. That said, Craig Mazin is incredibly close-minded about most aspects of writing and creation other than screenwriting - and in the case of screenwriting, he seems to think a (good) screenwriter can do literally no wrong. I mean, this is coming from the guy who made Hangover 2. Craig constantly belittles any non-professional screenwriters, all reviewers, all critics, and most websites on screenwriting. He's generally sexist, though of course he doesn't think he is. (No one thinks they're sexist.) Again, this is the guy who wrote Hangover 2, so obviously he is sexist and more than a little racist. John August seems like an agreeable guy. It's not as if I want my podcasters to be needlessly NICE people. But Craig is just small-minded, lacks empathy, and doesn't really seem that smart. So, yeah: not a guy I need a lot of attitude and spleen from, you know? If you're desperate for information about screenwriting, I'd just read John's website for the nuts and bolts. If you want help pitching or creating a film, just do it. Use your iphone, buy a DSLR - anything other than listen to this podcast. It's sort of like Car Talk for people who hate writers.Read full review »
