“August and Mazin point the way toward how to pound out completely proficient scripts, albeit without a hint of inspiration or, god forbid, some uneven uniqueness.
Their version of screenwriting and filmmaking is one way to do it, I guess. . . . Indeed, it mirrors their own output as screenwriters (August wrote the Charlie's Angels movies and the most mediocre of Tim Burton's recent output; Mazin was at the center of all those Scary Movies and and the Hangovers). So if those are the kind of movies you dream of spending your days and nights working on, maybe you've got a model here.
I would point toward another option, though: Take the technically helpful information on things like the role of producers and how studios are organized, but if you're spending more time following the writing advice of these guys over your own muse, you're probably headed toward the kind of bland, middlebrow (but technically proficient) dreck that we already have enough of.”Read full review »
