The Kind of Film Podcast We Need
Jon and Andy's podcast has quickly become my favorite film podcast out there, and I've tried them all! As of the first dozen episodes, I strongly recommend the sharp and passionate discussions of A Streetcar Named Desire, To Kill a Mockingbird, Planet of the Apes, and E.T., and especially the Oscars Special (more on that later). I have long wanted a series that took a different angle on great movies, not just discussing plot or genre but instead talking about the nuts and bolts of filmmaking—how a technique here or a reference there shapes our sense of tone, our understanding of character, our undeniable emotional response. Beyond that, it's a fantastic musical education! Each time Jon explains how a Lydian scale works or Andy points out a resonance between a particular cue and a bygone musical revue, I count my lucky stars that we have such helpful guides to the world of film scoring. I started listening around Episode 3, and the two hosts learn what they're doing very quickly. Their dynamic is particularly interesting for their two distinct viewpoints: Andy's if-it-works-it-works attitude contrasts effectively against Jon's insistence on the importance of scoring to picture. While they're often in agreement on the quality of a given score, these different outlooks illuminate different reasons to love what we're hearing. All in all, this is a terrific look at the tradition of film scoring—all the different influences, popular styles, and major figures. I'm already sad that the AFI series will be ending soon, but I look forward to hearing them cover a broader range of films! In part, this is why I strongly recommend their Oscars Special, which offers a strikingly close and appreciative analysis of five major contemporary composers—they even find new things to say about John Williams' Star Wars work! All in all, I love this podcast. Of my two dozen subscriptions, this is one of the handful I listen to as soon as an episode comes out. It's been great so far and I can't wait to see what the future holds! Keep up the good work!Read full review »

More reviews of Settling the Score
These guys are phenomenally listenable. There's enough nuts-and-bolts stuff about creating film music to keep my musician self fascinated, and there's enough silliness and verbal jousting to keep the proceedings far from dry. I don't know how they do it, but it's one of my...Read full review »

Love the show! I was wondering what you make of the score for Birdman by Antonio Sanchez? As a layperson, I found it to be incredibly innovative, but I’d be interested in a critical analysis, if you are up for it.
