“As a survivor of multiple assaults from family members and care givers let me first say that all my perpetrators were respected and liked - inc my main perpetrator who continues to teach.
Also the Gymnastics Olympic physiotherapist did his abuse with parents in room. So what is the point of harping on about what a great family they were - where no outsider saw anything amiss - oh except for the naked photo of the girls?
When I stood up against my abuse I was kicked out of home, and when I tried to get justice my family disowned me, and I was called a drama queen and liar.
There is a fair bit of gaslighting in this podcast and a false narrative that because everything looked normal to outsiders there wasn’t something darker going on underneath.
However I do not think Emily’s abuse is as violent or extreme - the amount of therapy time and therapy modalities is over the top. She’s come from a family competing for attention from a dad that’s both neglectful, absent, but when he is there he is controlling and only interested in their physical abilities.
Having that much therapy and attention on her is not useful and I agree - it’s warped the facts and built a big bonfire of abuse where I think the truth is more banal. If she has BPD then she needed another treatment modality to teach her perspective and nut out the truth of her trauma.
What I see is a dysfunctional and neglected group of young girls coerced into being “perfect” and the only attention they get is on their bodies, ie when the father massages them and trains them; and the mother takes and publishes nude photos of them. They are emotionally malnourished and controlled.
There is also admitted aggression, coercion and the father is definitely a predator and gas lighter, enabled by his wife - all the children he taught had crushes on him and they are lying; he didn’t hit Emily…oh except this time and that. He also admits to demons, and he doesn’t deny he might have stepped over a line.
What I think happened is the girls were abused by the swim teacher and I sense that when Emily and her friends were creeped on by the old man massause - something triggered her. I don’t doubt that her dad was getting turned on massaging his daughters - all daughters brought it up and a mother taking nude photos is extremely unsettling.
I think once they found out about his past accusations - Sarah and Emily would have been significantly triggered and re traumatised. Any questions they had about his massage sessions, and the mums nude photos would have come up.
He definitely abused them - but I don’t think it was as violent as Emily has portrayed as another child would have experienced the same or at least witness it.
What is missing from the podcast is a voice from someone like the CEO and Founder of Adults Surviving Child
What astounds me is the length of the sentences- it’s usually only around ten years.
It’s a thought provoking podcast but lacks balance.”
