pity about the music which is played over the narration making it difficult to concentrate on the story otherwise excellent podcast

Clearly advertising weekly podcasts but it’s not weekly is it ? Hasn’t been a new podcast added since start of April 23 and we’re now nearing 20th April 24 and there’s been nothing? Nothing added since 2023 and stupid here paid a subscription which I’ll be cancelling.

The voice of R.Garai is missed this season and the audio effects are too much for such societies narration, hence the 4 stars

This series … the stories seem unfinished … just doesn’t feel exciting anymore

I used to love this podcast but lately I’ve noticed that as well as the quality, the length of the episode has reduced but the adverts have become more frequent. 3 adverts for the subscription version in a 20 minute episodes is absolutely ridiculous and you’ve completely ruined the podcast. What...Read full review »

Something is missing since Romola Garai left and not just her excellent voice and pacing. Things seem to have gone downhill. There are now many ads. I just heard two in a row where one seemed to be for one of those predatory gambling companies. I refuse to support companies that destroy...Read full review »

She isn't auditioning for a Radio 4 short story. She is ridiculously dramatic with her intonation and pauses- as if she is reading fiction. It's unbearable- pretentious and false.Read full review »

Such a great podcast - made better after Tracy appears to have had some voice training - but please bring back the beautiful voice of Romola Garai!

I love this podcast as it’s produced so well… but I prefer Romola narrating and due to autistic sensory changes I just can’t get used to the new voice.
TinyPoleDancer via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 02/08/24
Now that it is subscription only you must have lost a lot of listeners especially as some people have to have the ads because they can’t afford subscriptions

In my top 3 podcasts. Wonderful story telling with a balanced mix of forensic technology. Just binge listened on a 14 hour flight. More please!

I absolutely love this podcast, each story is really interesting and the way it is told with two narrators work so well. I never find my mind wondering and I am always gripped throughout. Here’s to many more interesting episodes!
JemThom via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 11/08/23
Agree with other reviews that Romola’s narration is overly theatrical to the point of being irritating, and the sound effects are amusingly amateurish. Tracy Alexander saves the podcast. Her narration is natural and clear, and the stories themselves are fascinating without being salacious.

Love this podcast, only just come across it, but have already listen to them all. Can’t wait for the next episodes! I like the way that both girls have very calming voices, it’s factual with out dragging it out. Love it, keep up the good work.

Very interesting and more obscure/less podcasted about stories…… Great narration (lovely vocal tone main narrator, other one too:)) at a very measured pace which not only makes them extremely listenable but at times, despite some of the obviously disturbing content, quite relaxing! Been weeks since any new shows !!! What’s the deal I’m starving for it

I love the content of this podcast but I’m not keen on the way Romola reads her script - it sounds so affected and fake. Much prefer the scientist who speaks in a much more natural style. Overall a good true crime podcast though!

I am genuinely shocked that this is not number one in true crime. How in the world can a mess like "true crime junkie" be placing higher than this excellent podcast?Everything about this is perfect. Even the ads are not annoying, usually. Please keep it coming and hopefully apple's...Read full review »

Great show. Great narrative, not sensationalist but gives great factual forensic info.

Why is the ‘background’ music louder than the narrator? It’s exhausting trying to concentrate on their voice.

Having only just discovered this podcast I am very much enjoying the back catalogue. Good stories, well told. The only thing that is a bit annoying is the differing sound levels between Romola and Tracy. Struggle to hear Romola at times as she speaks very softly compared to Tracy who comes in...Read full review »

I’m a big fan of true crime podcasts but have stopped listening to the really intrusive ones that are unnecessarily gruesome. Smoking Gun is brilliant because it focuses on the forensic clue that solves the crime. Beautifully narrated and insightful.

Taken way too long to discover this pod. So many podcasts include the hosts opinions on the story which often feels like they’re “filling” rather than just giving us facts without constant breaks in the story. This is a perfect true crime podcast. The hosts have lovely, easy to listen to voices...Read full review »

The narration is top notch, and it’s absolutely fascinating how crimes can be solved with technology and seemingly benign objects. Pollen samples from tires to locate possible crime scenes…wow. One of my new favorite podcasts, and I love the tone of both narrators voices, almost ASMR.

Hi I normally never give a bad review normally I abstain but this time I feel it necessary. I thought this would be a great podcast full of lots of information about how crime was solved but to be honest it lacks a lot of information and the podcast is very short. The lady who reads the podcast...Read full review »

Succinct yet descriptive in its content, this podcast is expertly delivered to listeners. Though some of the true-crime event descriptions can be slightly disturbing, it’s not gory or overly graphic with the express intent to upset you. A great true crime podcast where the hosts smoothly narrate the stories without conjecture or ego. Just fascinating stories, expertly told.

Take a complex crime, with all the usual means, motive, and opportunity ingredients, along with sprinkles of victimology and focus on the object of their demise. This is a very well scripted production that has clearly been thoroughly researched. The narration leads you through interesting real cases using excellent storytelling. Fiction is not as good as this. Please make more!
Martian James via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 09/28/22
Quality research and excellent presentation. The addition of a knowledgeable forensic scientist with a lovely voice is the cherry on top.
Siggy Burzum via Apple Podcasts · Australia · 09/17/22
Really enjoyed series 1, but series 2 has been a bit slower and I don’t think the cases they explore have been quite as interesting, or really fit the smoking gun theme as well. Like the 2 presenters, they work well.

LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS PODCAST BRILLIANT

I enjoy this podcast despite it’s flaws. Clumsy writing and a somewhat monotonous vocal tone… but please…in the introductory sentences the wrong word is used. You do not ‘clench’ a case - the correct word is ‘clinch’. You ‘clench’ a muscle for example, or a fist…

I have really enjoyed this Podcast, it is very listenable. My question is that the banner headline says it is Season 2 but I can’t find any reference to Season 1 when searching. Maybe I’m looking in the wrong places?
Derek Novak via Apple Podcasts · New Zealand · 09/08/22
Fascinating stories told succinctly without any banter. You’ve come to the wrong place if you want hosts who bounce off one another. However, if you want a quick dive into some very interesting cases, then this is most definitely for you. I love it!
