“Dave and Dave are consistently informative, entertaining and intelligent. They created this "amateur" podcast a few years ago. This is far the best Steeler podcast available. Dave (Todd) brings the happy professionalism of someone who pushed himself into a sports-media career midstream (apparently through force of will). He now hosts a daily radio show on ESPN Pitsburgh. Dave (Bryan) brings a fans' enthusiasm and a quirky demeanor. D Bryan has also managed to assemble a loyal and zealous cadre of charters and volunteer information specialists to support his observations.
Both are bright and D Bryan is an obsessively informed observer who devours the "all 22" camera views (and occasionally snorts into the mircrophone). They are very at ease with each other and I was surprised to learn that they have not personally met. D Todd is based in Pittsburgh and D Bryan is based down south and apparently does not like to leave home.
I was a little surprised that the pairing survived D Todd's regular work on ESPN but it makes sense. D Todd gets a free ideas generator for his radio show and, after all, D Bryan helped further his career. D Bryan gets some time on the ESPN show and a larger audience. D Bryan seems to have an obssessive streak and this adds to the show: He obsessively watches "tape" and pursues all things Steelers. And he uploads a show almost without fail 3 x week during the season and regularly offseason, even though they only earn small donations. D Bryan often has interesting twists on conventional wisdom and he researches many of his opinions .
D Todd is also a regular and essential part of the show. He keeping things moving and provides a scaffold for the show. At first, D Todd had awkward moments when he thought he knew things that he did not. However, now he rarely lets his certainty outrun his preparation. He has also become more fluid and natural over time. His pleasant voice is a good contrast to D Bryan's excitable drawl. D Todd is more of the straight man. They have a sort of old Martin and Lewis thing going.
On top of that, they regularly host many of the smartest beat writers for the visiting team. You can tell that the beat writers enjoy being able to talk intelligently instead of the perenniel kabuki dance on most sports media. Their draft stuff is also great and they get good guests for that too. I think D Bryan predicted something like 3 of the first 4 Steeler draft picks in 2011. His Steelers Depot website is a monument to obsession benefiting mankind (in this case Stelers fans) as he posts far more often and more regularly than the paid professionals.
They are occasionally goofy but they never insult my intelligence. For my ears this is the best Steeler program available, whether volunteer or professional, radio or TV. I mean that. A self-made show that minimizes sports cliche's and maximizes paying attention.”Read full review »
