Big picture politics from a pro-Labour perspective
Steve’s friendly enthusiasm, his extensive knowledge of political history, and his feel for the possibilities of the moment are what I like most about his podcasts. I also like his homespun, slightly bumbling style. I find it refreshingly normal, although I suspect others would see it as a drawback. Another possible drawback would be the somewhat confusing relationship between the podcasts and Steve’s pay-per-performance live shows. These always feature in the podcasts and his talking about them takes up a fair bit of listening time. Steve’s sympathies tend to lie I think with Labour’s “soft left”, and he is clearly pro-EU, but one of the best things about his podcasts are their non-factional tone. In Labour Party terms he comes across as a pragmatist first and foremost; his starting point is on what works and what doesn’t work. He is always interested in what goes on (and what has gone on) in the other political parties too. In short, you get a big- picture sweep over the political talking points of the moment from a very well-informed and unstuffy centre-left perspective and he is well worth a listen.

Steve Richards makes an excellent host, and even when I find myself in disagreement with Steve Richards I enjoy being made to reflect on the 'why' of it.Read full review »
