Relevant, informative discussions of "female" topics
There are topics for podcasts which, if discussed by males, would appear patriarchal, misogynistic, or simply *wrong*. But these things should be discussed. "Stuff Mom Never Told You" attempts to cover the topics "Stuff You Should Know" really *can't* discuss. These topics may be "trivial" (lipstick, pantyhose, Disney Princesses) but they are also important and relevant (breastfeeding, women's suffrage, planned parenting). Similarly, the podcasts do not assume the *only* listeners are female. The 'casters are open to the male point-of-view and discuss non-female views openly and without "male-bashing". The two podcasters (Cristen Conger and Molly Edmonds) are educated, intelligent women. They make an effort to be well-researched (as do all members of the HSW stable) and provide as unbiased a view of the topic at hand as possible (as evidenced by all the feedback to the podcast of 19/11/09!). They acknowledge their life-experiences colour their views and opinions and do talk about their pasts when discussing topics, and acknowledge their own limitations (for example, they are not parents). These are not dry, fact-fuelled podcasts, but lively, informed discussions pulling data from a variety of sources (but certainly not wikipedia, a HSW taboo site). Of course, time often limits true depth of discussion, but isn't that the nature of podcasts? A jumping off point to further discussion, thought and research? What you need to know: - two 'casters - Molly and Cristen. - US based but discuss women's issues across the world. - two podcasts per week, approx 20 minutes per episode. - discuss a range of "female" issues. - some of the topics may not be appropriate for a pre-teen.Read full review »
