It was a great pleasure to have a conversation with former world class freestyle sprinter and one of the best and most innovative coaches of this era, Brett Hawke.
Brett told me the reason why he loves the sport of swimming (00:52), we spoke about his beginnings to the sport (01:43), and the best advice he ever received as a young swimmer (03:14). Brett told me where all his creativity comes from and where he finds inspiration (05:18) and about the most memorable race in his coaching career (06:40). I asked Brett what does the Olympic Games mean to him and how he deals with all the pressure around (08:15) and then we discussed the differences in training now and back in times when he was competing against the best in the world (11:35). We spoke about the reason why was the last world record in 50-800 LCM freestyle broken in 2009 (14:03) and then we jumped to Brett’s coaching career (15:49). He mentioned the differences between good and great swimmer (19:36) then we discussed the sprint swimming, where Brett disclosed the key to success in sprinting and his favourite sprint specific sets (21:36). The conversation continued to the important aspect of training, to mental preparation (26:12) and Brett’s favorite training and racing pools (27:54). We spoke about marketing and discussed how is the social media going to change the landscape of professional sport (29:58), what recent technology is helping the swimmers to train more effectively (33:26) and what he loves to do beside swimming (34:16). In the end of the episode Brett told me about his present work in Fitter & Faster camps and his future plans (35:19).
