Smart, insightful, and, most of all, HILARIOUS!
System Mastery has become my new favorite podcast because of how great a job the hosts do examining various out-of-print RPGs. Not only do they manage to make some sharp observations about why particular systems do or don’t work, they do so in a manner that often makes me laugh in such a way that I can only imagine that people who see me either walking the dog in the morning or on my way to work must think I’m a crazy person. I first came upon the show while doing a search for podcasts that had covered any of the Star Wars roleplaying games. I was kind of surprised to discover that they’d taken a decidedly negative attitude toward the much-beloved West End Games D6 game, but their reasoning seemed sound. I also got a few chuckles from it, so I also decided to see what they had to say about the basic D&D red box. Their examination of how the DM decides which spells the magic user receives caught me off guard with just how hilarious it was that I was pretty much hooked from that point on and made it a point to go back to the beginning. Thus far, Prime Directive, Haven: City of Violence, and Spookshow have been definite highlights. I’m also most definitely planning to check out the Movie Mastery podcast. I’d really like to hear them occasionally branch out into still-active RPGs just because I’m curious to hear their opinions of various games.

Don't believe the haters. Investing actual time in researching these terrible roleplaying systems would take away from the underlying Mystery Science Theatre vibe of the show. It's actually a great way for aspiring designers to avoid common pitfalls of RPG design. Plus the guys are super...Read full review »
