In this week's episode, I discuss with Ummi Hussein, who has worked with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities for 13+ years. During these years, she has become increasingly aware of the lack of support and assistance available to people with special needs and their families in our communities. Including the lack of inclusion and the inaccessibility of many of our programs, mosques, and Islamic schools for people with special needs.
This drove her to start an initiative known as Garabsii, which advocates and promotes inclusion for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Inspired by the Somali word that means lending a hand/support, Garabsii was formed to do just that.
In this podcast, we talk about what led her to do this line of work, her interactions with those with special needs, stigmas within our communities, and the issues we need to collectively address as an ummah.
