“I was 9 years old in 1956 when I attended my first ballgame at Ebbets Field. It was the last regular season game, Brooklyn won the game 8-6 against Pittsburgh, Newcombe won his 27th game, Duke hit 2 homers to win NL homer title with 43 HRs, the win clinched the pennant on the last day/season and it turned out to Jackie’s final regular season game (he hit a homer, too). So I was hooked on baseball. A year or so later I got my first life lesson with a broken heart when the Dodgers did the unthinkable and moved away.
As a kid I hated the Yankees. No way they could be my new team. And then there was talk of a new NL NY team. The selection of the name Mets was a head scratcher. Didn’t like the sound of it. I thought Metros sounded better. Still do. But whatever. I liked the selection of royal blue but would’ve liked blue, white and red numerals. But oh well. I was glad to have a local team to root for and their ineptitude was endearing. Every one of those 40 first wins felt like David slaying the Goliath.
So a suggestion for a show - a deep dig into the genesis of the re-entry of NL baseball in NY.
Keep up the great work, Mike.”
