Definitely worth listening to.
I have been listening to this podcast from the beginning. The first of anything can always be iffy, but I found myself very engaged. They have continued to get better, and 12 podcasts in I find The consistency of the podcasts refreshing, and the more complicated scientific aspects of bio technology brought down to a lay person's level. Dr. Folta is doing a great job communicating a controversial subject from the perspective of a public scientist. I hope he continues to stay the course and bridge the gap between public scientists and the public. The topics are fascinating and display the diversity of positive applications of biotechnology. You'll hear everything from arctic apples, which don't brown, to genetically modified mosquitoes, which are intended to precisely reduce the population of dinghy fever bearing mosquitoes. The guests are experts on their fields and the discussions include honestly addressing elements of concern from the popular anti-GMO movement, which has been precision targeting the reputations of public scientists who are proponents of genetic engineering/agricultural biotech. While I don't know the man personally, I am amazed at how he doesn't "bark back" at the activist movements that publicly try to defame him. When the matter of controversy associated with genetic engineering arises, he actually steps outside of his role as a scientist a little to state explicitly that he understands there are concerns and that part of the reason is that the scientific community has failed to bring this multi-faceted & complex issue down to the layperson's level. Then he continues by discussing the issue in earnest and discussing both positives and negatives from a very scientific and practical perspective. I'm glad the public harassment, which he has endured for speaking honestly about his field of expertise, has not deterred him from continuing to communicate on behalf of biotechnology and all of us, who stand to benefit from it. I certainly encourage anyone, who has questions/concerns about biotechnology to ask on his podcast. Send him a question on Twitter. Listen and learn. I hope you find yourself as amazed as I was.Read full review »
