The hosts have weirdly soothing tones that are great to run to. I mean, I came for the political analysis and I stayed for the voices 😂

Helen and David always miss a number of the subtleties when discussing the EU. Living between two of the major frenemies that they always discuss in detail as they try to read the runes, they seem to miss: - the virtual invisibility of the topic in the popular press and TV news - the ironic...Read full review »

Wonderful in its range and sharpness of analysis but periodically spoiled by the anchor’s pushing of his personal politics, which neither of the other regulars do.
quentinskinnerfan via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 07/05/20
The best politics podcast that there is. Whatever biases the contributors have, they keep them well hidden.
SimCard1 via Apple Podcasts · Germany · 07/04/20
Talking politics is reluctant to ever jump into an easy media narrative. They always see the unique qualities of a moment when others would assume a pattern some other commentator had mooted. And they see the patterns that connect moments to a history practically forgotten. Great special series -...Read full review »

Actually, it’s a quality discussion to be fair.....BUT......they simply can’t think from a Brexit POV and make no attempt to get a guest on who balance re opps if don’t have a deal, etc. Same every week.....Metro elite luvvies have lattes....but least this lot more educated than BBC...Read full review »

This is a key piece of how I escape the bubble of U.S. political media.

Insightful and honest - recommended

This is possibly (probably) the best podcast out there.

Catherine and David make an extreemely inciteful duo for the analysis of both historic and cureent politics. Without doubt my number one political podcast.
The Rhodesian via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 06/26/20
I don’t always agree with David and Helen but this is a superior podcast combining intellectual rigour, clarity and integrity. Adam Tooze is an outstanding guest. A cut above — well above — anything other political podcast or commentary
WannabeCravenette via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 06/26/20
A fabulous, insightful, intellectual (but never dull!) and articulate discussion of British politics and current global issues. Recent debates around British identity politics really resonate with me. Having grown up in South Africa and now living in New Zealand with roots back to England and...Read full review »

David Rinciman does a fine job of putting this podcast up but I listen for a chance to hear Helen Thompson. Together they provide a calm and very well informed discussion of current issues. I started listening to try to make sense of Brexit. Those times seem quaint and simple now. But still Helen...Read full review »

This podcast is always really good, but the Nine Dot Winner episode was superb. Best analysis of today’s politics I have heard.

A rare combination of coherent, intelligent and knowledgeable discussion of the issues of the day with an interviewer who has a voice I could listen to all day. Wonderful!

Great further reading links below each podcast. LRB subscriber.

David Runciman and his guests connect the politics of the moment to broader historical and philosophical trends. They manage to be very of the moment while hushing the din of daily news cycle. So much more nourishing than the fast food of daily opinion-mongers.

We live in a very polarised society and we need to listen to different views, especially those that may not be ours. It’s about getting wiser through better understanding of issues and positions. David is doing a fantastic job tackling a high diversity of subjects and choosing guests who are...Read full review »

Excellent podcast. So good I stopped running to listen to it properly. And listened again when I got back in. Balanced, thought provoking, informative and nuanced.

Subject matter always interesting. Can be a bit recreant in an English middle class sort of way when Helen Thompson is not there to add accuracy and backbone.

A listener for 4 yrs. usually big fan but VERY disappointed by recent episodes, particularly uncritical platform given to far left US activists advocating for “militant civil disobedience”. Ie violence?! Not to say they shouldn’t be invited to speak, but no counter argument presented despite...Read full review »

Been listening to this podcast for about three years now. It’s been an excellent examination of what is going on in the UK and USA. The last few episodes, however, without Helen Thompson, have been of a much lower quality. David Runciman, unfortunately, lacks a critical eye. Maybe he is suffering...Read full review »

I normally enjoy TP as a fairly balanced (although somewhat left-leaning), thoughtful podcast. “Police State USA”, was, however, pretty dire. Giving far left “street activists” an uncritical platform to air their loopy views and utilise their sly euphemisms (“de-arrested”? “Street organisations”?...Read full review »

Interesting conversations by leading political scientist David Runciman. If you’re looking for more, go to the “History of Ideas” series by David.

The May 27th podcast was amazing. It was a dispassionate and knowledgeable discussion on pandemics and how they influence society. First time I heard about the near wipe out (90%) of Native Americans due to Columbus mentioned during these type of discussions.

Talking Politics is probably the strongest regular analytical discussion of UK politics, though it’s faint aversion to challenging liberal orthodoxies has led it to shy away from interviewing more influential political thinkers from left & right - since December’s election they seem to have...Read full review »
