Tennessee grain farmers depend a lot on export markets especially for corn and soybeans and recently, the US Grains Council held their Export Exchange Conference in Ft. Worth, Texas and several participants from that conference traveled to Tennessee and Kentucky to see firsthand how the products they buy are produced.

Besides tending to the needs of those that have been impacted by the affects of Hurricane Helene, there’s also an ongoing effort to care for livestock and pets. That’s part of the reason the University of Tennessee College of Veterinarian Medicine has deployed its mobile small animal care unit along with a large animal ambulatory truck to the area.

Joseph and Meredith Redman of Washington County were recently named this year’s Tennessee Young Farmers & Ranchers Excellence in Agriculture winners. The results were announced at the annual fall educational tour, and the couple was extremely proud to take home the win.

Upper North East Tennessee is trying to make sense of the devastation left behind from hurricane Helene. The more than 30 inches of rain that fell in Western North Carolina sent massive amounts of water down the Nolichicky river, flooding many areas in East Tennessee. People lost homes, bridges were knocked out, and many farmers lost a lot of crops. Despite the massive loss people are coming together to help their neighbor in need.

During the Wilson County/Tennessee State Fair two of the grand champion market hogs were purchased by Tosh Farms, they in turn donated the pigs for free processing at Potts Meats and then the meat products were donated to Cul2vate in Nashville that will be distributed to needy families.

Dry conditions have allowed farmers across Tennessee to get an early start on harvest this year. Those same dry conditions though have taken a toll on corn in certain parts of the state. As Thomas Capps explains, some farmers are seeing poor yields while others are seeing above average.

Cover Crops are not a new thing for farmers in Tennessee, but there is still a lot we're learning about them and their benefit to soil. A grant program through Agricenter International called, Farmers For Soil Health, is working to incentivise even more farmers to grow cover crops by paying them to grow them. The Nashville Sounds baseball team held Ag Night recently at First Horizon Park. Over 50 FFA members from area chapters attended to take in the ballgame but also tour the facilities and learn more about careers in agriculture from a panel of industry leaders.

Farmers are encouraged all the time the advocate for the Ag industry. A great way to do that is by talking to media on camera. The Tennessee Farm Bureau recently held a women's communications boot camp to help teach ladies in agriculture the best practices when being interviewed on camera.
