“I’ve worked as a top-performing individual contributor in a professional environment for two decades and have struggled with OCD, generalized anxiety & depression most of my life. For the past 5 years, my mental health slowly became more manageable through a combination of meds, proper diagnosis, DBT/ERP and my children growing less dependent as they all finally reached school age, while my work environment because less and less conducive to being able to sustain my new confidence and acceptance/realization that my (and many others’) “disorders” actually have the capacity to be seen/utilized as superpowers professionally and personally. These conflicting realities resulted in my departure several months ago because I finally was able to put my individual needs above all else—above money & stability for my family (this was the most difficult as a successful, female primary-household-earner my entire career—I still am plagued by thoughts of my “selfishness”), as well as above my anticipatory anxiety, self-doubt (imposter syndrome), perfectionism & fears of taking risks, harming my family due to my decision etc. I am only several months into building my proofediting-for-businesses company & terrified daily due to barely generating revenue, but I’ve never felt so creative, motivated, inspired to succeed or hopeful now that I have gifted myself the potential to make a significantly greater impact on many more lives & female-founded businesses in the future in a way that would never have been possible if I’d stayed in an unhealthy workplace and/or wasn’t “lucky” enough to have the health challenges that I do. I am so grateful for the serendipitously timed guidance & support of this new series of transparent stories highlighting managing mental health successfully & visibly in the business world.”
