One Of My Favourite Political Podcasts
Since discovering it a few months ago, the Axe Files has become one of my favourite podcasts. There are two things I especially like about it. The first is Mr Axelrod himself. He is an intelligent, articulate and above all thoughtful interviewer, a man who brings his deep experience of political life into the interview room without making it feel as if the program is all about him. While it is obvious that he comes from a particular part of the political spectrum his open, inclusive style of questioning allows his guests to express their own opinions, positions and biases and one ends up with a far better understanding of his guests than one would get from a more confrontational style of questioning. The second thing I like is the range and the intelligence of the people he interviews. Because of Mr Axelrod's experience and background, he is able to sit down with a very high calibre of guests and to talk to them with a level of understanding and effectiveness which even skilled political journalists do not always match. The resulting interviews are eye-opening. Even people with whom I would not have expected to feel much sympathy given my own political leanings generally turn out to be intelligent, humane, committed and honourable when given the opportunity to speak about their views in a format which isn't constantly looking to trip them up and score points. In a world which seems to have become so partisan, where it often seems impossible to engage reasonably with those whose views are different from one's own it is hugely encouraging to be reminded that there are people on all sides of the political debate who are honest, committed and dedicated to the public good. The Axe Files gives me a weekly chance to be introduced to such people and I nearly always get to the end of one of these interviews feeling feeling better informed and more encouraged about the state of the world than I was at the start of it.Read full review »
