First Season Great. Reboot is Glib, Less Informative and Often Merely Snarky
The first season of the podcast is excellent and most episodes are even now well worth listening to. Informative and good natured. One of the oringal hosts - the mostly affable Greg Jorgensen- remains in the Season 2 reboot. The other original host - Tony Joh - has been replaced and the podcast is now far less informative. The current reboot instead is now all too often more like overhearing tacky tourists making snarky comments. Bangkok is now relegated to background. This may be necessary because Tony Joh's replacement isn't a long-time Bangkok resident and unfortunately brings a frustrating superficiality to the podcast. (Case in point: There's even an episode about why he can't be bothered to learn the Thai language. Similarly, he reports on a visit to a sacred tattoo ceremony, but could never be bothered to find out about "the guys wearing white". (!)) The podcasting equivalent of a tire salesman who decides to start selling aluminium siding because, well, "sales is sales." Podcasting about Bangkok - sure, easy peasy. While the first season included an informative segment about interesting things going on in Bangkok in the coming week, the currrent reboot has a weekly segment that are often tedious and all too often snarky -- to downright mean-spirited: "What is with those small paper napkins" "What is it with Thai people pushing elevator buttons" "What is it with all those comb-overs" etc., etc. Occasionally there are some decent interviews.Read full review »
