“The show lives up to its name.
Tom is a hero to the aggrieved everyman, training his eye on the culture and asking, "Who WANTS this?" on our behalf—nobody renders quiet outrage so palatable. But he's got a good heart; he reminds me of a certain old college friend with whom I used to get drink and yell about things.
If it seems insidery, stick with it. I've been a listerner for two years and there are still references I don't get, but it starts to make sense after a while. The cast of regular callers, guests, and characters take on a weird presence and liveliness of their own, and, in a weird way, sort of become disembodied friends. My only regret is that I usually can't listen live and participate in the show. But these three-hour podcasts make my subway ride and grad student squalor a little less hell. “If you listen once and don't get anything that's going on don't worry, I didn't either at one point. Give it 5 or maybe even 10 episodes and you'll see why every review on here is a 5. These reviews aren't plants like some people suspect. We just feel this show needs the recognition it deserves.”
