The show lives up to its name. Tom is a hero to the aggrieved everyman, training his eye on the culture and asking, "Who WANTS this?" on our behalf—nobody renders quiet outrage so palatable. But he's got a good heart; he reminds me of a certain old college friend with whom I used to get drink and yell about things. If it seems insidery, stick with it. I've been a listerner for two years and there are still references I don't get, but it starts to make sense after a while. The cast of regular callers, guests, and characters take on a weird presence and liveliness of their own, and, in a weird way, sort of become disembodied friends. My only regret is that I usually can't listen live and participate in the show. But these three-hour podcasts make my subway ride and grad student squalor a little less hell. I never miss it.Read full review »

More reviews of The Best Show on WFMU with Tom Scharpling
If you listen once and don't get anything that's going on don't worry, I didn't either at one point. Give it 5 or maybe even 10 episodes and you'll see why every review on here is a 5. These reviews aren't plants like some people suspect. We just feel this show needs the recognition it deserves.

I live in the Twin Cities and we have some great community and college radio and this show still tops it all. Great...Read full review »

Thank goodness WFMU in New Jersey has started to podcast "The Best Show..." Now other than the Ricky Gervais podcast, this is the only one that makes me double over with laughter. I love my new hernia!
