Gosh I love this podcast, but...
Juliet Litman's vituperative, wrongheaded rant (expressed as"hatred") against gifted actor Ben Whishaw queered me off of this favorite podcast. This was the episode reviewing "Mary Poppins Returns" and Litman's "I hate Ben Whishaw. I hate everything he does," was so peculiar and off-putting I thought about it for quite awhile. Whishaw is an actor with deep reservoirs of emotion, but singular in how much access he has to that emotion. Perjoratively, he could be criticized for being lachrymose - but never without motivation. He is also an actor who is gay in real life and often plays gay characters, and plays them very well (see "A Very British Scandal" on Amazon Prime). This made me wonder if Whishaw's raw sensitivity, and sometimes androngynous affect "queered" Litman off. This whiff of homophobia on her part can only be subjective on my part and I'll leave it at that - but LItman's peculiar blindness and visceral repugnance to one of the most gifted actors of his generation is for me, a bridge too far. But for Litman's participation, The Big Picture with Sean Fennesy and the regular co-host Amanda Dobbins is a 5 star podcast - a smart, detailed, fun look at current cinema.Read full review »

I could take Amanda bashing animated movies to a point but I lost it when she said get rid of the best song category in the oscars. ALL THE STARS WAS ON THE BLACK PANTHER SOUNDTRACK. Probably one of the worst takes ever. Love Sean though and his interviews are amazing.

This show is not good if Sean isn’t hosting. Should be renamed A Star is Born, because they make it seem like it was the best movie ever released. I can’t take a show about movies seriously when some of the hosts/guests refuse to watch animated pictures.

I’ve been listening to Fennessy on 33 and rewatchables for a couple of years. Great conversation, always.
