Appalachia needs no elegy
I want to suggest a different approach that could benefit the folks a d placed you care about. Don’t criticize hill billy elegy as telling only one part of the Appalachian story. Celebrate that it drew attention to the region Capitalize on that opportunity and work with its author and publisher and anyone else connected with it to spread the larger story of other Appalachian stories. And try to use that coalition/cooperation to raise funds to support Appalachian economic development and education. We need those who love Appalachia to work together to enhance its good aspects and heal its wounds. To spend precious energy and resources criticizing someone else’s efforts is hurting what you love.
