““The South” is used multiple ways.
It’s a region where people live, love and work (me included).
It’s a code word for backwards. And racist. And stupid. And unwilling to change. And “Fergit, Hell!”
It’s a vibrant, diverse place, when you look at Asheville and any of the Greensboro’s.
But it’s a place this podcast apologizes for, a lot.
Like Chuck, I’m a white man, raised in GA, and in my late 50s. I’ve never lived in NYC (once or twice), but I’ve dealt with the results of my drawl in business meetings.
But, while I apologize for many of the things that my southern neighbors do, I don’t feel my region needs “redemption”. Particularly if redemption means becoming indistinguishable from the rest of the country. My region, like my country needs healing. And hope.
Racism should not be tolerated anywhere. Yet it exists everywhere.
Our history is what it is - you shouldn’t remove part of it to focus on others (as the GA history books did in the 60s and 70s) anymore then you should add in the missing parts and remove what was already there (as appears to be the current climate). It’s like when you’re learning to drive and you run off the road. Then you over correct, until your across the center line. You don’t need to stay there, anymore than you ought to stay in the ditch.
I appreciate the production of your podcast and it’s writing. And the newsletters. They make me think. Sometimes about things I haven’t thought about. But this one hit a nerve.”
