“Neal is a great conversationalist and podcaster; he’s an interesting and engaging thinker. While I had seen the movies and tv shows he’s written over the decades, I didn’t become aware of him until hearing him guest on a podcast many years ago and I’ve been following his work ever since. I’ve listened through his years to the Champs podcast and would search his name from time to time to listen to other podcasts he would be on as a guest. While I always found him smart and funny, I noticed he has become so much more engaging and well-rounded in his thoughts and expression in the last year or two, in both his standup and conversations. He used to occasionally exasperate me with classically myopic, incendiary, over-confident white man takes… I definitely noticed he had a lot of anger (or at times, in difference) toward women, relying on confirmation bias, gravitating toward terrible stories or experiences to justify his views. I once debated with him on something related to a misogynist statement he made via DM and it seemed like he was hopeless stubborn and confined to his pessimistic views. While I found him funny and interesting, I didn’t used to leave his podcasts with a good feeling, although I kept listening to new episodes because he is far more interesting and honest than most. But now, something seems to have shifted in the past year or two and he seems to have more breadth in the way he thinks and speaks, and he’s a lot funnier, more skilled as a conversationalist, more relatable and enjoyable to listen to now that he doesn’t have the willfully stubborn and pessimistic edge. I now love hearing him talk about his experiences with ayahuasca, his journey to find resolution with his family trauma, depression, and explore his sense of purpose. I hope he can rest now in knowing he has skillfully, humorously, honestly opened some doors to new conversations.”
