Not investigative journalism
This podcast is repetitive and not at all impartial. The reporter regurgitates the father’s position without any independent analysis or commentary, notwithstanding his objective lack of credibility (as exemplified by his portrayal of the family violence incidents at the home). It is utterly hypocritical to, on the one hand, argue that the police investigation was flawed, while on the other hand accept the findings of that investigation insofar as it pertains to the father (including his alibi, for example). Additionally, the reporter heavily implies that the mother should be further investigated, notwithstanding that as between the mother and the father, the father is (at least on the evidence presented in this podcast) the person with a demonstrated history of family violence. This is not to say that I have a view of either person’s culpability, but it highlights the reporter’s lack of objectivity and apparent indifference to casting the mother as suspicious or, at the very least, an inadequate caregiver (a tired and misogynistic journalistic trope).

I was not aware of this case and found drawn into this podcast. Extremely engaging. Heart breaking and frustrating at times but you follow the journey with heart with the narrator.

How has this investigation been such a cluster? Highlights some very poor policing. A well put together podcast. A must listen for all NZers.
