Plagiarizing patriarch
I listened to the ANTs (automatic negative thoughts) episode and was turned off by how Dr. Daniel Amen claimed he came up with the different type of ANTs (i.e. All or nothing thinking) when his "ideas" are entirely derived from the cognitive behavioral therapy method that has been in development since the 1950s by Albert Ellis and Aaron Beck, and more recently David Burns. As a practitioner and researcher, it's disappointing that he didn't give proper credit where it's due. I was even MORE turned off by the "sex on the brain" episode where Tana implies that men have sexual needs that female partners need to satisfy (i.e. Be a good cook in the bedroom) in order to keep their male counterparts happy. She explains: "I talk to a lot of women and they have this idea: He should just understand, and it's not all about sex. Well I have news for you. It is for him. A lot of it is about sex for him. And it's not because he's a pig. It's because of how he's wired. ..so take a little responsibility for your relationship." I think it's insulting to suggest that men are motivated and driven by sex, and somehow hardwired that way, and don't have the capacity to emotionally connect with their partners without sex. I know a lot of sensitive men that enjoy sex but are also able to be sensitive, emotionally available and connected to their partners. Furthermore, it's REPRESSIVE and patriarchal to say men need sex and women should provide. Why does it have to be women giving and men taking? Why can't it be mutually beneficial and each equally partaking? Can't speak to the other episodes, but so far I'm disappointed and turned off.Read full review »
