Bill Bryson is NOT British. He’s from Iowa. So would that make his work ‘American’ ?

This is an exceptional literary podcast and hands down one of my most favorite podcasts (of which there are quite a few). The hosts and guests are knowledgeable about their subject matter and the choice of reads is varied and wonderful. I have been introduced to so many great authors and books...Read full review »

Finally there's a lit podcast that isn't afraid to sound "intellectual" and dive into literary criticism in their discussions. That being said, Jake and Alex make big and complicated ideas understandable and easy on the ears - they remind me of those teachers or professors whose enthusiasm in the...Read full review »

Jake, Alex, and their guests always provide easy-going but serious discussions of literary fiction. I am always impressed by the fact that they consistently pick such difficult books and never fail to have an accessible conversation about it. The music is also solid. Keep up the good work boys!

I started listening to TCA after a recommendation from a friend. Its my official go to when I want to challenge my day-to-day thinking and being stuck in my own little world. The literary works they cover are so diverse and the POV's offered leave me rethinking my own opinion of the work or...Read full review »

If I could join an ideal book club, it would be hosted by The Casual Academic. Alex and Jake analyze the works they read by blending an engaging discussion of the historical and social context of the work at hand, interesting facts about the author, and thoughtful critique of the work itself. ...Read full review »

The authentic enthusiasm for the works they review will rekindle your love of literature, often forgotten or made secondary by the waves of entertainment available on a screen. Alex and Jacob explore their chosen works in a deep but accessible way. Give it a listen.

Must-listen literature podcast! Some real witty commentary here about some famous and not-so-famous authors. I really liked it and highly recommend it.

Jake and Alex break down uniquely popular authors with a knowing sense of bewilderment. This is what makes the podcast so refreshing. Frank discussions between narrators who genuinely find the topic challenging, yet enthralling, lead to the ideal listening experience. Not only is this accessible...Read full review »

The podcast fits a mold exploring interesting and excellent works of literature via academic lenses. Both Alex and Jake find a good middle ground approaching the works they analyze as interested readers but also academics. I highly recommend it to all those looking for a new perspective on a...Read full review »

K. woke up one morning and found that he had downloaded this podcast. However, after the closing notes of the outro sounded in his headphones, he discovered much to his distress that it kept on playing. Indeed, the headphones themselves were as if glued to his ears, and as the intro started up...Read full review »

I don’t usually rate things from the grave, but when I do, I choose The Casual Academic. The work done here is good and true. The moon was so bright and cold and the Parisian goats were walking along the windless banks of the Seine and you knew you would write this review and you would always...Read full review »
