“I was brought up with the Archers as a daily chore, and yet in adulthood it happily morphed into a daily source of pleasure, irritation, escapism, delight and frustration. So often have I rejoiced in the bucolic comfort of the Ambridge soundscape; yet how much more often, perhaps, have I shouted and sworn at the radio, knowing deep down that I was merely screaming into the void.
Enter stage left The Cider Shed, where three Archers fans (avid listeners, at least) talk openly about what they love, hate, find frustrating or ridiculous about the antics of Ambridge. I may agree, disagree, chuckle knowingly or feel desperate to present an opposing point of view; yet regardless, I know that I am firmly amongst friends.
This podcast is not without irreverence, digression or silliness. It offers no pedestal to The Archers and no cow is deemed too sacred to be scrutinised. All of which is incredibly welcome, to the point where I now wake up on a Sunday morning and my first port of call is to see whether a new episode has been released (hoping that it’ll be a long one) and then to plan when in my day I shall treat myself to listening to it, before inevitably devouring it over breakfast (only to repeat it later, just to feel the full benefit).
Keri, Matthew and Peter are all such delightful people, each with their own distinct perspectives and tendencies; they aren’t afraid to disagree nor indeed to poke gentle fun at one another, and yet their interactions remain without fail essentially warm and mutually supportive. I want to be in their gang; and listening to The Cider Shed, I am made to feel that I am.”
