Unnecessarily insulting to women
I was hoping for an informative podcast on paleontology. I tried to be patient with how hard they were trying to make paleontology sound cool and fun. This is a fascinating subject as it is. There should be enough adults interested in the history of life on Earth. We don’t need to make the show like a kid’s corner at a natural history museum. But I understand the reality of it. They can get more listeners by turning a possibly dry subject into a fun conversation. Here’s where they went too far: the sand striker worm is a predator like many animals on Earth. The hosts were not responsible for the insulting name of “Bobbitt” worm, but they didn’t have to make jokes about it, saying that the worm “was named after a horror movie character”. So we’re essentially calling Lorena Bobbitt a cold-blooded killer, a monster. She was repeatedly raped and beaten by her husband before she was driven to revenge. As many as 90% of women in jail for killing men had been abused by those men. Violence against women is a real problem in society. As scientists, the least the hosts of this show can do is ignore it and stay within the topic of the show.

This podcast is mostly about paleontology, but aimed at a popular science audience. The presenters discuss articles in scientific literature, and provide sources for everything, but jargon is either avoided or explained so it’s easy to understand if paleontology isn’t your field.
